Fireflies in the Alligator Sky

Hey guys and welcome to another blog post of mine ^^ I know I said I'd post last Friday, but I wasn't able to because, unfortunately, I turned in pretty early -.- Sorry for that, but hey, at least I'm here now ^_^ Anyways, I promised that this post will be filled with music, literary pieces made by me, and reviews of all sort. Well, I won't be able to place any literary pieces in this post since I plan this one to be a review of a certain American electronic/synthpop musical project formed by a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist last 2007 in Owatonna, Minnesota. If you recognize the the title of this blog post, then I'm pretty sure by now you would've known what musical project I will review today. Hints? It rhymes with Howl Mitty.

Yes, that's right, I'll be talking about Owl City. This musical project was formed by Adam Young, who used to load Coca-Cola trucks for a living. He suffered insomnia during those days so he turned to composing music. He received attention when he uploaded some of his songs on MySpace. This popularity was the start of what would later result in his signing to a major label. I'm gonna stop right there with all this history thingamajig because I
just basically rephrased what was being said in Wikipedia >_>

"Fireflies" was the song that propelled Adam Young to fame as it had become a quadruple-platinum hit single, and his lesser hit "Vanilla Twilight" boosted him up a bit more. The two songs are part of his first studio album "Ocean Eyes" from which he gained mainstream popularity from during the year 2009. Fireflies became the most-downloaded song on iTunes in the US. Clearly this meant Adam Young's decision to switch from truck loader to music composer was a great idea for him and the rest of the world who simply loves his work.

Before the Owl City project, Adam Young had other side-projects. The first solo project he started was Sky Sailing. He formed the side-project in the year 2006, before he started recording and performing Owl City in 2007. Although he left this project in favor of Owl City, an album was released by the project on July 13, 2010, An Airplane Carried Me To Bed. It featured some of the early recordings of Adam Young, before he toured as Owl City. Here is a quote by Adam Young describing the songs in the album:

I've kept these recordings secret for a long time and they've never seen the light of day until now. Long before Owl City was ever a spark of a flame, a lot of blue-collared working days were spent absentmindedly daydreaming about what would ultimately become this collection of songs. From the perfectionist musician's perspective, a song is never truly 'finished' but rather 'abandoned' and thus, after a lot of inspiration and reckless experimentation, I emerged from the basement with an 11 song record which I affectionately entitled, An Airplane Carried Me To Bed." - Adam Young
Some of Owl City's songs had been included in official soundtracks. One of them being "To The Sky" for The Legend of the Guardian: Owls of Ga'hoole's OST and another being "Sunburn" for the album Soundtrack 90210. Owl City's music is described as indietronica and synthpop and is often described as belonging under the broad "alternative music" label. Young also incorporates a large amount of his Christian faith into his music since he is a vocal Christian. Owl City is a huge fan of Lights, a Canadian singer-songwriter, who like Owl City, writes and plays optimistic rave-tinged new wave pop songs. They opened Owl City's 2010 tour and have developed a friendship.

Recently, Owl City has released another album entitled "All Things Bright And Beautiful" featuring the song Alligator Sky, which has two versions, the one where there was only Adam's vocals and the other with guest rapper Shawn Chrystopher. Personally, I like the non-rap version better, but both versions are very good. Don't beleive me? Hear for yourself =P

And last February, Adam released a cover/reply of Taylor Swift's "Enchanted." Anything going on between them? I dunno. I just like listening to his music. I don't need to know about his love life. But either way, the song is really catchy. I suggest you listen to it. Like, right now.

See? Or to be more precise, hear? And it's obviously meant for Taylor Swift since he mentioned her name a lot in the song >.>

Well, I guess that's all I can say about this musical project. If I had to give Adam a score, I'd give him five Nyan Cats out of five >.<

And that's all for today's post. I can't give you a hint of what's coming up next since I haven't really thought of what to do next, but I guess I'll start my weekly fanfic series tomorrow. I've had this thought up for quite a while and I think I've thought all things through for this fanfic. If all goes well, then this series will keep you guessing for the ending ;] Until then, this has been Ash_Ketchum and I'm out.
